A Guide to Berlin's Christmas Markets

Whether it’s visiting one of the many remarkable museums, getting a feel for the city’s rich history, experiencing some of the incredible nightlife, or sampling the currywurst and steins of craft beer; Berlin ticks all the boxes for a perfect city break. This is particularly true towards the end of the year, when the German capital transforms into a real-life winter wonderland. Over seventy Christmas markets are spread across the city, we’ve picked our top five for you to visit and soak up a truly festive atmosphere.

Alexanderplatz

Located on Berlin’s most famous square under the iconic TV tower, the Alexanderplatz Christmas markets attract hundreds of tourists from across the world every day. The highlight is the largest Mountain Ore Pyramid in Europe, twinkling with colourful lights as the tower trumpeters play festive tunes inside; you can’t help but feel cheerful at the sight.

Winter World on Potsdamer Platz

One for the adventure seekers… This is home to the largest mobile toboggan run in Europe, at 70 metres long! There is also an ice rink for you to skate on, or try your hand at curling. These are also surprisingly cheap compared to the UK, it is only €2.50 to skate on the rink, and €1.50 for a ride on the toboggan. There are also your classic market stalls selling bratwurst, mulled wine, and roasted nuts, which can be sampled whilst you enjoy après-ski vibes as live DJs perform later in the evening.

Gendarmenmarkt

The picturesque location, gourmet food, and fine arts and crafts give this a name as one of the more luxurious markets in the German capital. You are likely to find a unique and special Christmas present here from the arts and crafts tent, home to glass blowers, candle makers, goldsmiths and more. There are also a variety of daily performances from renowned international artists for you to enjoy in the comfort of a heated tent!

Charlottenburg Palace

The markets situated by Queen Sophie Charlotte’s former residence offer a truly majestic Christmas experience. The already-stunning palace is illuminated with a spectacle of colourful lights, offering a perfect fairy-tale backdrop to these traditional German markets. There is a truly magical feeling here as an orchestra performs Christmas carols, and scents of glühwein and baked goods waft between the wooden stalls.

Rotes Rahaus (Berlin City Hall)

These stalls on the Old Berlin Market Lane present a more historical version of Christmas than its close neighbour at Alexanderplatz: witness fresh bread being baked in a medieval oven and a tavern serving hot mead in clay jugs. It offers a sample of the past in an otherwise modern setting. The best feature is the 50m-high Ferris wheel, offering panoramic views of the bustling city in all its festive glory... definitely not to be missed!

Whether you visit just one or all five of these magical markets, Berlin is the perfect place to get you in the festive spirit. We are running trips there between 13-18 December 2019 from a number of cities in the UK.
